Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal, celebrates 18th annual foundation day.

IMPHAL — The 18th annual foundation day celebration of the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), a state-run medical institute located in Imphal, was held at its Porompat premises in Imphal East district on Thursday.
The occasion, which marks 18 years of the institute’s dedicated service in advancing medical education and delivering quality healthcare in the region, highlights JNIMS’s sustained progress in strengthening tertiary healthcare services and its continued efforts towards achieving excellence among leading medical institutions.
Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Commissioner-cum-Secretary of Health & Family Welfare Sumant Singh, and Director of JNIMS Prof. L Usharani Devi were also present at the event.
The governor released the 18th annual report and the college magazine — Nongin. Bhalla, along with the commissioner and director, also presented awards to meritorious students of the institute.

Addressing the gathering, Governor Bhalla said that the foundation day was both a moment of celebration and reflection, noting that over the past eighteen years JNIMS has grown into a leading centre of medical education and tertiary healthcare in Manipur.
He highlighted the institute’s significant role in strengthening the state’s healthcare system through the training of skilled professionals and the provision of advanced treatment facilities within Manipur, while underscoring that medical education must be grounded in compassion, ethical values and community service.
The governor emphasised that the role of a medical institution extends beyond hospitals and classrooms to research, innovation, preventive healthcare and public outreach.
He expressed satisfaction over JNIMS’s participation in national and state health programmes, and encouraged the institute to strengthen research, adopt technology and align with national health priorities, expressing confidence that it would achieve greater excellence in the years ahead.
In his address, Sumant Singh stated that JNIMS’s role has been strengthened through its association with several key initiatives of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, including the establishment of a multi-disciplinary research unit and region-specific cancer research under the Department of Health Research, a viral research and diagnostic laboratory network under ICMR, a state referral laboratory for rabies under the National Rabies Control Programme, and a 50-bedded critical care block under the NHM.
The day’s programme was attended by faculty members, doctors, nurses, students, and staff of JNIMS, along with other guests.
