Dimapur, Aug. 1 (EMN): In the wake of massive exercise undertaken in the state of Assam for detection and deportation of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh through updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC), Nagaland unit of the Janata Dal (United) has decided to take the issue in the next meeting of the People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) for similar exercise in Nagaland.
JD (U), in a press release issued by its media cell, has announced to take up the issue of updating NRC on top priority in the next PDA meeting for a similar exercise in Nagaland in the form of thorough and elaborate electoral revisions or any other methods deemed fit and appropriate based on December 1, 1963, as the cut-off year.
It mentioned that the final draft of NRC, which was conducted in Assam under the direct supervision of the Supreme Court of India and declared on July 31, has left out about 40,07,707 doubtful applicants.
While recalling that a massive electoral revision exercise conducted by the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) some decades back, however, JD (U) stated that a total successful conclusion could not be reached due to various reasons.
JD (U) also cautioned that the indigenous rights and privileges of the Nagas and other rightful non-Nagas based on the above mentioned cut-off date and year should not be misused by any individual or authorities so as to accommodate other non-indigenous people in consideration of personal, social, tribal, religious or party affiliations. It added that indigenous inhabitants of Nagaland should not allow any outsiders to infringe upon their rights under any circumstances.
