DIMAPUR — According to data from the Controller General of Patents Designs and Trademarks (CGPDTM), Nagaland is among the states and union territories lagging behind in the country in terms of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) registration.
Meanwhile, there has been a consistent growth in applications for the protection of various IPRs in IP offices under CGPDTM's administrative control.
In 2022-2023, overall filing of applications for various IPRs (6,01,789) has been higher as compared to the previous year (5,68,049), exhibiting an overall increase of 5.94%.
The increasing trend in filing of applications for patents, designs, trademarks, copyright and geographical indications has been observed during this year as compared to the last five years, as per the Intellectual Property India annual report 2022-2023.
During 2022–2023, a total of 82,811 patent applications were filed, exhibiting an increase of about 24.64% as compared to the previous year. Domestic filing of patent applications has also increased to 43,301, which is 52.29% of total filing as compared to 44.41% in 2021–22.
In the year 2022-2023, four ordinary patent applications were filed from the state of Nagaland, compared to six in 2021-2022.
According to the Northeast state-wise distribution, Assam filed a total of 211 ordinary patent applications, Tripura filed 35, Meghalaya filed 29, Manipur filed 19, and Sikkim filed three.
In 2023, 4,66,580 applications for registration of trademarks were filed and 3,95,405 applications were examined. The number of trademark registrations and disposals during 2022–23 was lower by 11.25% and 8.38%, respectively, as compared to 2022, due to the discontinuation of contractual manpower and new recruitments undergoing training.
Among the northeastern states, Nagaland filed a total of 57 applications for trademarks in the year 2022–2023. Assam filled the highest number of applications with a total of 2,534, followed by Tripura with 171, Manipur with 126, Sikkim with 80, Meghalaya with 73 and Mizoram with 28 applications for trademarks.
During the same period, in terms of geographical indications, a total of 211 applications were filed, 100 applications were examined and 55 were registered.
A total of four geographical indications were registered from Nagaland in 2022–2023. Assam had the highest number with 11, Mizoram had seven, Manipur had six, Meghalaya had two, and Sikkim and Tripura had one each.
During 2022–2023, a total of 22698 design applications were filed, which were the same as the previous year. The number of design applications examined was 21905. Registration and disposal of design applications during 2022–23 increased by 53.33% and 52.65%, respectively, as compared to 2021–2022.
A total of 29,466 applications were received for copyright registration during 2022–2023. A total of 2,48,96 applications were examined and 12,082 registrations of copyright were done, whereas a total number of applications disposed of was 21,171.
