Dimapur, March 7 (EMN): On the occasion of International Women’s Day – celebrated annually across the world on March 8 – the governor of Nagaland PB Acharya has extended “his greetings and best wishes to the women of Nagaland in particular and the country in general.”
The Raj Bhavan issued a press statement on Tuesday stating that the governor had said that the day was a time to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.
“The governor called on the people of Nagaland to uphold women’s achievements, recognise challenges and to focus greater attention on women’s right and gender equality. He stated that in 2015, world leaders adopted the Sustainable Development Goals, placing gender equality and empowerment of all women and girls at the heart of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
“Achievement of the goals, including ending poverty, promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth, reducing inequalities within and between countries, and achieving gender equality and empowerment of all women and girls, rests upon unlocking the full potential of women in the world of work,” the statement read.
He was reported as saying that the educated people should be conscious of the positive impact of gender equality. “There is a need for change in perception towards women and society would benefit most only if women are treated equally and not deprived of their rights. Equality should be for all, regardless of gender, age, race or nationality, where everyone should command the same respect, and enjoy the same opportunities,” according to the statement.
The governor also stated that Naga women were second to none and “have been contributing towards the progress of the society in every field and called on the people to remind one’s self that empowerment of women and equality; liberty and dignity are sacred rights of women and also maintained that gender equality is the need of the hour.”
