Imphal, June 21 (EMN): With the heart-throbbing songs by various music bands, solo singers and other performing groups at many places, Manipur celebrated ‘International Music Day’ on Wednesday at Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy auditorium, Imphal. The event was grace by Commissioner Information and Public Relations K Radhakumar as Chief Guest and Retired Vice Chancellor Manipur University Prof H Tombi as Guest of Honour.
The event is celebrated with an objective to promote music in the state under the aegis of Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy (JNMDA) Imphal and Gitanjali Performing Group of Art & Music.
Addressing the gathering the chief guest said there is a huge impact of western music in their culture so that they need to do proper research and carve a unique place of Manipuri music on the global arena. He warned that they should try to preserve their identity, originality and indigenousness against the influx of Western, Korean and Bengali elements in the region.
Prof Tombi said that the whole concept behind organising the IMD was to spread the awareness and importance of music to the general public of Manipur ever since the idea was conceived and put into actual practice in 1982 in other parts of the world.
