International Mother Language Day celebrated at Sao Chang College, Tuensang, and in Chennai with cultural programmes highlighting linguistic diversity.

DIMAPUR — The Department of English, Sao Chang College, Tuensang, celebrated ‘International Mother Language Day’ at the college conference hall on February 21.
Students of English Hons participated during the brief commemorative programme, which was chaired by Takumpuba Lomou, Assistant professor, Department of English.
According to an update, Akyuba Sangtam, HoD (English), welcomed the gathering and delivered the keynote address.
Taking part in the programme, students from the 6th, 4th, and 2nd semesters rendered group songs in native languages/dialects, marking the day.
Dr. Santosh Kumar Singh, Associate Professor, Department of English, gave a brief talk on the significance of ‘Mother Language Day’. Addressing the students, he spoke on how a person's mother language is the first language that they learn, and it is the strongest connection that they have to their home, their identity, and their culture.

While stressing the main purpose of celebrating the occasion, he told the students how this day is celebrated in order to promote awareness of language and cultural diversity all across the world.
Dr. Singh also emphasised the fact that young people were not just inheritors of languages but active defenders and innovators shaping their future, adding that protecting mother tongues ensures that cultural diversity thrives.
In Chennai, the day was celebrated with a programme on February 22. The programme was inaugurated by Wapangtoshi, President of the North East India Welfare Association Chennai (NEIWAC) and Pastor of the Naga Christian Fellowship Chennai (NCF Chennai).
Speaking on the occasion, Wapangtoshi stated, “India is a country that cannot be confined to a single identity. It is not limited by one language, one culture, one religion, or one political ideology. Instead, India exemplifies unity in diversity — a testament to how differences can coexist peacefully. Its true strength lies in embracing these differences while remaining united as one nation. India is not a single story but a collection of countless stories woven together into one vibrant and extraordinary country.”
The event, organised by Bharat Bharati Tamil Nadu at Agarwal Vidyalaya, Chennai, saw participation from representatives of 22 states, showcasing their cultural heritage. An Ao-Naga song from Nagaland was presented by Akumpong Jamir.
