IMPHAL — The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, themed ‘The evidence is clear: Invest in prevention,’ was observed at Manipur State Film Development Society in Imphal on Wednesday.
Manipur’s Social Welfare Minister, Heikham Dingo Singh, Director of Social Welfare Ngangom, Uttam Singh, and Padmashree Dr. A Jayanta Kumar Singh, who is also the director of the State-level Coordinating Agency, were present at the event.
During his address, Heikham highlighted the alarming increase in drug abuse among youth and students. He pointed out that the prevalent situation in the state is directly worsened by the widespread availability of drugs.
He urged stakeholders to join hands with the government in combating drug abuse in schools and colleges. He also underscored the environmental impact of drugs, describing it as a 'war on nature'.
In his address, Jayanta talked about the importance of commemorating this day. He said that one reason for the increase in drug use is the insufficient awareness and community involvement in educating and raising awareness among young people.
He emphasised the necessity for resources and political mobilisation, collaboration among various stakeholders, and evidence-based policy programmes to tackle the drug menace in society.
Uttam instructed all rehabilitation centres to adhere strictly to the guidelines issued by the Social Welfare department. He also called upon the heads of educational institutions to install the necessary surveillance systems to apprehend drug peddlers.
He also advocated for the implementation of a joint action plan, including the establishment of student clubs, organising low-budget awareness programmes, and setting up crisis intervention centres in every school. He stressed that early treatment is the most effective form of treatment.
At the event, awards were presented to the winners of the state-level painting competition and short films. All attendees, including officials and staff from the department, guests, and school students, participated in taking a pledge.
