Education dept. contemplates migrating Physical Education teachers to Youth Resources Department
MOKOKCHUNG — Advisor for School Education and State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, revealed on Tuesday that the Department of School Education (DoSE) is contemplating migrating its Physical Education Teacher (PET) cadres to the Department of Youth Resources.
He said this on the inaugural day of a two-day Inter-District Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) and Government High School (GHS) Tournament 2026, held at the Imkongmeren Sports Complex, Mokokchung, here on Tuesday.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Yhome noted that the School Education department currently lacks adequate PETs. Those available are merely attached to individual schools and rarely participate in activities beyond district, state-level, or annual school sports meets.
He explained that the proposed shift would enable the Department of Youth Resources to deliver professional training and wider coverage, extending sports development not only to government schools but also to private and central institutions across the state. The move aims to professionally nurture children and support their holistic growth, he said.

Dr. Yhome further revealed that the Directorate of School Education has already drafted the “Nagaland School Sports Policy", which the Department of Youth Resources is currently reviewing. Once it receives final approval, the document will be adopted as an official state policy, he informed.
He recalled that the state had earlier followed the “Catch them young” approach, but the DoSE has now developed a structured strategy to identify talented young boys and girls, pinpoint specific sports disciplines, and work toward achieving international standards.
Under the new policy, the advisor said the system would be strengthened so that PETs oversee all annual sporting events under expert supervision. Regular teachers will also receive training from PETs on how to organise and conduct such events professionally.

Looking ahead, Dr. Yhome announced that Nagaland will soon host the ‘Asian Sepak Takraw Event'. This follows the state’s successful organisation of the 16th National Games Sepak Takraw event for Girls at the IG Stadium in Kohima—an international-standard facility—where the Nagaland girls’ team secured the second position.
Returning to the ongoing tournament, the advisor emphasised its significance in fostering unity among districts and providing early exposure to competitive sports. He pointed out that participating athletes are selected through a rigorous process at school, inter-school, and district-level meets before advancing to individual and team events.
“Today you are wearing your district’s uniform, but one day you will represent the state and make the entire nation proud by representing the country,” he told the young participants, motivating them to strive for excellence.

Dr. Yhome added that future editions of the tournament would cover all districts of Nagaland and feature an expanded list of sporting events. The next edition is likely to be hosted in a district with superior sports infrastructure. He also expressed strong support for organising combined government and private school meets and for greater sharing of sports facilities between institutions.
The two-day tournament features a range of athletic and team events. Athletic competitions included the 100m and 200m races (boys and girls), 4x100m relay (boys and girls), 1500m (boys), 800m (girls), discus throw (boys and girls), shot-put (boys and girls), and long jump (boys and girls). Team events comprised badminton doubles (boys and girls), volleyball (girls), and sepak takraw (boys).
The participating districts are Tuensang, Shamator, Mon, Phek, Tseminyu, Mokokchung, Nuiland, Longleng, Peren, Chumoukedima, Noklak, Kohima, Kiphire, Meluri, Dimapur, Wokha and Zunheboto.
