DIMAPUR — The Inter-District and State Badminton Championship 2026, hosted by the Mon District Badminton Association in conjunction with 75 years of Mon town, commenced at the Main Indoor Stadium in Mon on Tuesday.
The 48th edition of the tournament, which runs from September 1 to the 4th, was attended by Advisor to the Chief Minister and President of the Nagaland Athletic Association Abu Metha as the special guest during the inaugural programme.
According to an update, in his address, Metha said it is not easy to organise such programmes in a far-flung district like Mon, adding that organising such an event is a service to the state.
Metha encouraged the players to play with discipline, commitment, and punctuality. Pointing out that sports require hard work and that there are no shortcuts, back-door appointments, or recommendations needed, he urged the young players to perform well to qualify in sports. He stated that sports give a platform to serve the state and country, making the people proud.
He expressed hope that the tournament will be a stepping stone to higher levels and will bring people together through sports. Metha also appealed to the players to be ambassadors for peace and unity in the state before declaring the championship open.
Earlier, the welcome address was proposed by Deputy Commissioner of Mon, Wennyei Konyak, who is also the Planning Convenor and Senior Vice President of the Nagaland Badminton Association.
