Mokokchung, November 18 : Governor PB Acharya on Friday said the integration of India in the North East is at stake and called upon the people of the region to wake up from their slumber.
Addressing the students and faculties of Fazl Ali College, Mokokchung, one of the premier colleges in the State, in the college auditorium on the second day of his visit to Mokokchung, Acharya mentioned that China derecognises Arunachal Pradesh as part of India, the migrants from Bangladeshi entering Assam is making another part of Bangladesh in Assam and Myanmar is a safe haven for all insurgent groups from North East India.
In this regard, he called upon the universities to wake up and open their minds to make our nation strong again.
Acharya also observed that inspite of five universities in the State thousands of students venture out to the cities in other parts India to pursue higher education. “It is a clear indication that there is a hunger for empowerment among the youths,” he stated.
“Inspite of enough institutions, there are thousands of students studying outside the State. What is happening in Nagaland?” Acharya wondered. “Our education system should be made capable of addressing the needs of the State,” he said while asking the students of Fazl Ali College to wake up and think what they could contribute to help progress the society.
He lamented that the individuals empowered with knowledge do not want to give back to the society. This is the handicap and constraint the British education system has created, he felt.
Therefore, the Governor suggested that the education system should be revamped focusing more on areas. This could help explore untapped rich resources of Nagaland to become a self sufficient state, he added.
“Universities should not only be a centre of knowledge only but they need to be the centre of development too,” he added.
Acharya also suggested that universities must have dialogues on natural resources, industries, trades and commerce to incorporate these skills into the academic curriculum.
He also pointed out the challenges faced by the universities. He said the State has an Agricultural University that is doing researches and has also produced a good numbers of doctorate degree holders but still we are not self-sufficient in food.
He, therefore, opined that the research should be socially-oriented base research that will benefit the people.
Principal of Fazl Ali College Chubayangla, in her welcome address, briefed the visiting Governor about the college and its achievements since its establishment in 1959. She informed that besides Science and Arts, Commerce stream in the college would commence from next academic session.
