Kohima, Aug. 23 (EMN): Construction of the two-lane Sanuorü Bridge, an important project that would connect urban passages to the Nagaland Secretariat in Kohima, is slated to commence in a month or two.
Speaking exclusively with
Eastern Mirror, the additional chief engineer for Roads and Bridges K Theunu disclosed that construction of the bridge about 97 ft across stream, would start right after monsoon and would take about tentatively a year to complete.
The officer divulged that funds amounting to INR 20 cr. have been released from the central road fund (CRF) for the construction of a two-lane bridge across Sanuorü.
"Constructing a bridge across the river will only be the viable choice to bring a permanent solution to this area since the introduction of other engineering tactics will be a burden for maintenance for one instance," he said. He added that dumping waste into the streams, drains and culverts has to be checked because it leads to blocking drains, which result in water stagnation in the river.
It should be mentioned that the Sanuorü road was washed away during the monsoon of 2015. Subsequently, a narrow subway was constructed at an estimated cost INR 2 cr. However, this year’s monsoon rains washed away the subway in several locations.
Few residential houses including the YWCA hostel were evacuated as a preventive measure due to the continuous sinking aggravated by the construction of this subway/diversion.
From which INR 1 cr. was sanctioned from the Urban Development department. The remaining INR 1 crore was sanctioned by the Nagaland State Disaster Management Agency.
