The Delhi units of INDIA bloc parties will hold a joint protest outside the Delhi Election Commission office on Wednesday.
NEW DELHI — The Delhi units of INDIA bloc parties will hold a joint protest outside the Delhi Election Commission office on Wednesday against the SIR and demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The decision was taken at a meeting attended by representatives of the Congress, Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India (Marxist), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP), among others, according to a statement issued by the Delhi Congress on Sunday.
Delhi Congress general secretary Anil Bhardwaj said the parties had decided to jointly oppose what they termed a "flawed" SIR process and seek its immediate repeal.
"The voter list is the foundation of democracy. If any process is adopted that could potentially remove voters' names or impact their rights, the INDIA Alliance will not accept it at any cost," Bhardwaj said in the statement.
The parties also demanded that the electoral roll revision process be made transparent and conducted in accordance with constitutional provisions and voters' rights.
Bhardwaj said the October 7 protest would be a joint effort to "protect the rights of Delhi voters, fair elections, and the democratic system".
The meeting was attended by CPI secretary Dinesh C Varshanay, CPI(M) general secretary Anurag Saxena, RJD's Naval Kishore and representatives of the NCP and RSP, besides Congress leaders.
