IMPHAL, July 2: Various low-lying areas of Imphal city have been flooded on Saturday following intense downpours in selected areas of the state since Friday, throwing life out of gear even as important rivers are swelling above the danger marks. The sudden report of flash flood in Imphal was reported a day after heavy rain claimed life of a girl in Churachandpur town in Manipur’s Churachandpur district. Movements of vehicles were also affected severely due to landslides at Sehjang near 86 CRPF camp along the Imphal-Silchar highway and Mongkotchephu along Imphal-Ukhrul oute, reports added.
Owing to the overflowing of blocked drainage and rivulets, various low-lying areas in Imphal city and its surrounding areas including Uripok, Andro Parking, Thangmeiband, Nagamapal Kangjabi Leirak, Lamphel, Palace Gate, surrounding of Shree Govindajee temple, Wangkhei, Khurai and some office complexes including District Court at Uripok have been inundated.State Irrigation and Flood Control Department and the district administration have been alerted after the water level of Nambul, Imphal, Iril and Kongba Rivers started running above the danger level in Imphal West and Imphal East districts of the state.
In the meantime, water level of the flooded Churachandpur town, about 65 km south from Imphal, has been receding slowly when the report reached the media. Earlier the hill town was hit by flash flood on Friday following heavy rain and flash flood in the low lying areas of hill town.
A five-year old girl Tingpaklian of Thiakbung in Thanlon sub-division, and student of Preparatory Class at Covenant School, passed away after she slipped into overflowing drainage located next to their house.
Heavy rains that hit parts of the Churachandpur district for about an hour on Friday noon also left many areas under knee-deep flood water as road-side drainages and concrete river banks were breached at several locations across the town.
Villages in and around Loktak lake have also reportedly been flooded due to the overflowing of the streams and drainage. At the same time there was also a report of sudden rise of water level of the Lake.
