Mokokchung, June 5 (EMN): Expressing serious concern over men’s greed and his action towards random destruction of environment, the Speaker Dr Imtiwapang Aier of the NLA on Monday called upon the people that tangible action following a road that leads to sustainability should be initiated before humanity reaches the "point of no return”.
Dr Aier who was the chief guest at the celebration of World Environment Day at Mokokchung Town Hall also said one of the common cause of environmental degradation in Nagaland is the result of shifting cultivation where felling of trees are involves, followed by seasonal forest fires.
Due to deforestation and forest fires, the majority of the diversified plants that were protected over the years by communities have been lost or extinct he stated.
The NLA Speaker informed that Government and various NGOs are spreading the concept of awareness but admitted that Government alone cannot protect the environment which is decreasing at a rapid rate in the state.
On that note, Dr Aier appealed the people, student community and the stakeholders to bring a tangible change by transforming this issue into a people’s movement where every single citizen contribute towards conservation of Nature and Environment.
Urging the parents to transmit the traditional knowledge of environmental preservation to the younger generation, Dr Aier also suggested to the people of the district to make Mokokchung a “Pollution Free Zone” and bring the present Ecological balance into a “Neutral Carbon Free Zone”.
“We should make sure that this protected natural beauty will be handed over to the next generation without damage,” Dr Aier said while saying the Pollution Free District can be achieved only with people’s cooperation.
