Importance of Evaluation department overlooked—Sethrongkyu

KOHIMA — Advisor of Information Technology and Communication, Economics and Statistics and Evaluation, Sethrongkyu, on Tuesday, stated that the Evaluation department can check all the government departments and their related development activities in the state despite the importance of the department being overlooked by many.

Sethrongkyu reminded that the department could contribute effectively if its employees actually understand their roles, responsibilities and works assigned to them.

“We should be diligent enough in discharging our duties and assignments given to us,” he said.

He was addressing a felicitation programme organised in his honour at the directorate of Evaluation in Kohima. 

Asserting that the government has assigned duties and responsibilities to each of them, he reiterated that they should be sincere in assessing the function of the government in order to serve the people in a more productive and efficient manner.

“Serving the people of a state is the main priority of the government,” the advisor said, while apprising that he would schedule a time to discuss the policies of the department.

Sethrongkyu stated that he contested the election with a commitment to serve the people of the state and sought the cooperation of the officers in order to carry out the assigned tasks and also take the department forward.

“Since I have been assigned to take care of the department, I want you to all cooperate with me in the true spirit of transparency and honesty,” he said adding in doing so, they can achieve their desired goal.

“I have many plans to take forward the department assigned under me so that someday this department will be a department that people will look up to,” he added.

He also asked the government servants to reach out to him with their problems and grievances without hesitation in order to take up those issues.

Sethrongkyu also assured to look into the needs of the new districts in the state requiring new offices and creation of posts among other issues, as apprised to him by I Sentinuklu Jamir, the director of Evaluation department.

“Let us join hands together to achieve whatever has not been achieved,” he implored.

When Eastern Mirror asked about his commitment on the portfolios given to him, he said the projects and proposals that are feasible and applicable in Nagaland should be implemented and affirmed by saying, “it should happen.”

B Rendysowa Ao, additional director, explained that the main purpose of the Evaluation department is to undertake evaluation studies on the intervention schemes and programmes of the government to assess whether the initiatives are impacting the targeted goals and beneficiaries, and to suggest ways and means to bring about improvement in their formulation and execution.

He informed that the sanctioned strength of staff is 125 but existing strength is 111.He apprised that there are 11 district evaluation offices, which are functional at present.

He informed that the department also conducts evaluation study on any centrally sponsored schemes (CSS), state projects or schemes, company and international welfare programmes such as UNDP, ADB, IMF, World Bank, UNICEF etc.

Despite lacking in technical manpower, Ao informed that the department has successfully published 67 evacuation reports on various intervention programmes, which are available in public domain.
