DIMAPUR — The
India Meteorological Department (IMD) will celebrate its 150th anniversary on
January 15, 2025.
To commemorate this milestone, IMD has planned year-long
activities starting January 15, 2025, culminating in a foundation day
celebration at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, stated a press release.
As part of the celebrations, IMD will organise a National
Meteorological Olympiad (Met Olympiad) to promote interest and awareness about
weather and climate sciences among students. The olympiad will target students
from classes 8, 9, and 11, conducted at state and national levels.
The olympiad will be conducted in two stages, beginning with
the state level, which involves an online test for registered participants.
This will be followed by the national level, featuring a contest and workshop
for state-level winners in New Delhi.
The olympiad includes a one-hour online examination
comprising 60 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) focused on meteorology and
related sciences. For registration, study materials, the syllabus, and sample
questions, one can visit mausam.imd.gov.in/met-oly. The olympiad will be
conducted exclusively in English.
It was mentioned that participants must ensure that their
devices (computer, laptop, tablet, or mobile) and internet connectivity are
compatible with the online test platform. The organisers will not be held
liable for any technical issues encountered during the examination.
State-level prizes will be awarded for each class (8, 9, and
11), with the first prize of INR 5,000, the second prize of INR 3,000, and the
third prize of INR 2,000.
The top three state-level winners from each class will be
invited to New Delhi for a one-day workshop on January 14, 2025, followed by
participation in the IMD’s 150th Foundation Day celebration on January 15,
2025.
IMD will cover all travel and lodging expenses for the
winners and one accompanying teacher or guardian.
