The apex students’ organization representing the Kyong Naga students’ community has asked the halfhearted administration and government apparatuses to start taking proactive and strong administrative steps against the growing influx of illegal immigrants in Wokha district.
The time has come for the government to start taking strong and comprehensive action on war footing, the Kyong Students’ Union (KSU) has stated. The union issued a copy of a representation on Thursday addressed to the authorities, seeking ‘immediate and necessary action’ in the interest of public welfare. Besides, the demand to start working to check illegal immigrants, the union also listed out a number of other neglected issues such as random driving licenses issued to people the union said was ‘random.’
“Controlling influx of illegal Immigrants and devising a pro-active and pragmatic policy with regard to ILP: It is felt and also seen as to how the influx of illegal immigrants in Wokha district is adding to the myriad problems already affecting society in all spheres of human conduct,” the union said in the representation.
The KSU placed a strong reminder to the authorities that the issue of illegal immigrations and immigrants in the region demands immediate and comprehensive action on a war footing.
“The KSU also demand that a proactive and pragmatic policy is evolved in regard to issuance and renewal of Inner Line Permits (ILP) to deserving immigrants, a comprehensive database should be devised, collected and maintained thereafter in order to streamline the process of checks and balances in the process of issuing ILP including necessary measures towards checking the defaulters.”
Another matter that the organization raised was what it called ‘random’ issuance of driving licenses to all and sundry without verification or identity verification. This must stop immediately, the KSU has stated.
“Random issue of driving license: The KSU demands an immediate halt to the practice of randomly issuing Driving Licenses from the district to all individuals from all quarters without proper verification of proofs of residence, identity and citizenship.”
Absence of officers in office
The KSU has raised yet another familiar but unresolved issue – the constant absence of officers and government employees in office.
Heads of departments continue to stay away from their places of posting which has affected functioning of the departments, the representation said. “The KSU is strongly of the view that the government departments within the district should be working for the task for which they are assigned for – welfare of the people of the district– and not for the individual purposes of the officers and staff posted therein,” the union stated.
The KSU has asked all heads of departments within Wokha district to be stationed within the district for ‘proper and smooth functioning’ of their departments to cater to the needs of the people.
