DIMAPUR — In a display of sheer lack of civic sense and apathy, indiscriminate dumping of waste continues along the Nagaland Zoological Park road at Ikishe village, despite repeated reports about the menace, regular clean-up drives, warnings, and no littering signboard in the area.
Rubbish bags thrown from moving vehicles have gradually turned the roadside into an unauthorised dumping site, becoming a major eyesore.
On Saturday, the Urban Division Dimapur Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) along with the Ikishe village took the matter into their hands by organising “Swachhata Hi Seva 2026” and cleared garbage strewn along the stretch, using their own machineries.

Ikishe Village Council Chairman, Kakhevi Kinimi, told Eastern Mirror that a fine of INR 10,000 would be imposed on anyone caught dumping garbage in their jurisdiction.
“We have cleared the stretch with the PHED and covered the area with green sheets. We will also put up a notice board prohibiting dumping of garbage,” he said.
SDO, PHED, Chümoukedima Sub-Division, H. NagahoSema, said that as per the Supreme Court's directive under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, every household should practice waste segregation at source.

Both the village council and the department expressed hope that citizens will stop littering the stretch indiscriminately.
It may be mentioned that the village has been making effort to curb the menace by clearing the rubbish several times but has failed to address the issue, as people continue to dump waste. The villagers had earlier told this newspaper that the main challenge is the inability to monitor the isolated stretch round-the-clock.
They also said that the waste appears to be dumped largely by commuters using the road rather than by residents.
