Dimapur, June 3 (EMN): Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) National Research Centre on Mithun (NRCM), Medziphema, celebrated its 29th foundation day on June 2.
State Education minister Yitachu Fithu, who graced the occasion as the chief guest, had appreciated the efforts taken by the institute in popularising the scientific rearing of mithun and stated that the presence of the institute has benefitted the farming community of the region. He further stressed the importance of caring the local bio-resources, including mithun, for the posterity.
Dr. Abhijit Mitra, Director of ICAR-NRCM, welcomed the dignitaries and apprised about the achievements of the institute.
The guest of honour, Dr. Chandan Rajkhowa, former Director of ICAR-NRCM, while sharing his experiences, reasserted that culture of mithun rearing has tremendous potential to transform the lives of tribal population in the NEH region. He expressed satisfaction over the progress made by the institute in past years and credited to all the staff of the Institute, who have worked with sincerity and zeal to bring glory to the institute at national and international levels.
In the morning session, dignitaries witnessed the semi-intensive rearing of mithun in the farmer’s field in Molvom village, Medziphema, an initiative of NRCM launched last year.
Farmers and students from the local schools participated in the programme. The student’s band of SFS School presented a special number including the national anthem.
A total of 600 orchard saplings were distributed to the farmers from Molvom, Medziphema and Hekeshe villages of Dimapur district. A total five mithun heifers were also distributed to the villagers of Midziphema for rearing under the semi-intensive system.
On the occasion, the best employee awards were given to Dipal Meitei (administrative cadre), Vizekrol Kikhi (technical cadre), Vacuzo (skilled support staff), Kameshwar Sharma and Akle Dorjee (TSM cadre) by the chief guest.
Other dignitaries present at the function were Dr. Lallan Ram, Director of CIH; Dr. RC Gupta, Dean of SASRD; Dr. DJ Rajkhowa, Joint Director of ICAR, Nagaland Centre; and scientists from Nagaland Centre.
The programme was coordinated by Dr. MH Khan, Dr. S Mukherjee, Dr. Kezhavituo Vupru, Dr. Kobu Khate, Dr. Sapuni Stephen Hanah and Dr. Lalchamliani. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by principal scientist NRC on Mithun, Dr. Nazrul Haque.
