Dimapur, Nov. 24 (EMN):The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) Nagaland centre organized a seminar to discuss the subject of ‘enhancing farm income and livelihood security in Nagaland,’ recently. The ICAR issued a press release on Saturday informing about the event.
During the event, Nagaland Governor PB Acharya, the chief guest of the programme, inaugurated an exhibition unit and a sale counter; a mushroom spawn production unit and an ornamental fish breeding and rearing unit.
In his address to the event, Acharya lauded the initiatives taken by the ICAR and the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) to uplift the socio-economic condition of the farmers through sustainable agricultural practices.
‘He motivated the farmers and the entrepreneurs to be more pro active and to be self sufficient in all aspects. He also requested agriculture and allied departments and all the agricultural universities to motivate and mould interested and promising entrepreneurs,’ the press release stated.
The governor is also said to have emphasised on ‘bringing out at least five entrepreneurs from each district in various sectors and encourage the graduates to take up such venture.’ The ICAR and the universities should work in collaboration so that the benefit of research and development reaches the interior areas, the updates stated.
In his inaugural speech, the joint director at ICAR, Dr. DJ Rajkhowa, highlighted the role and activities being undertaken by the ICAR for the development of agriculture and allied sectors in the state. He was quoted as having advised that the farmers adopt scientific way of farming for ‘self-sufficiency of agriculture and allied sectors in a sustainable way.’
A farmers-scientist interaction programme was conducted as part of the programme during which resource persons from the ICAR centre and KVK addressed problems and questions raised by farmers, the updates stated.
Likewise, a technical session on agriculture entrepreneurship development in Nagaland was held where lectures were delivered by Dr. G Kadrivel, principal scientist; Dr. S. Ruth Assumi, scientist; and Nilufar Sheikh, NID-Guwahati, the press release stated.
Inputs in the form of livestock, seeds and farm machinery were distributed to the farmers and 11 publications including extension folders and training manuals from the centre were also released by the chief guest, the updates stated.
