Imphal, Dec. 7 (EMN): A Manipur based Institute of Bio-resources and Sustainable Development (IBSD), National Institute of Department of Biotechnology , government of India, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government of Meghalaya for operationalizing IBSD Meghalaya this month, according to official sources.
The MoU was signed by Director Prof Dinabandhu Sahoo of IBSD and Director D Syiemiong of Agriculture Department, Government of Meghalaya.
IBSD Meghalaya is said to function from both Shillong and Tura.
The main mandate of IBSD is ‘the development of Bioresources and their sustainable use through biotechnological interventions for the socio-economic growth of the north eastern region,’ stated a release issued by IBSD.
According to Director Prof Dinabandhu Sahoo of IBSD, the IBSD Meghalaya will aim to bring convergence of different state departments, national institutes and universities to develop biotechnological interventions, technological packages and also undertake human resources development for sustainable utilization of bio-resources for creation of jobs and economic development of the State.
“We are grateful to Chief Minister Dr Mukul M Sangma of Meghalaya and the officers of the departments of agriculture and urban affairs who have provided critical support for the operationalisation of IBSD Meghalaya,” he added.
Considering the tourism potential because of availability of the cherry bloom trees in abundance in Shillong and also to connect the hill town in North East India with the rest of the world, IBSD in collaboration with the Meghalaya government have been continuously organising first and two other editions of International Cherry Blossom festival in Shillong during the month of November since 2016.
