IMPHAL, October 30: Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh today inaugurated the new building of Imphal Public Library, one of the oldest libraries in the State, at Uripok Sorbon Thingel Leikai, Imphal.
The function was organised by Executive Committee, Imphal Public Library and Community Development Society, Uripok Sorbon Thingel.
While speaking as chief guest, Okram Ibobi Singh said the government is planning to establish one library each in all districts of the state.
“Library is a treasure and temple of knowledge and a boon to people. It is the place where knowledge is preserved. A good library would be very useful for the future younger generation,” he said.
He said inauguration of new building of Imphal Public Library is not the end, adding assets have to be created and proper management of libraries is a necessary part of the library. He urged the people of the locality to have sense of ownership for having a good library.
He also assured to provide recurring grant as assistance from the government if possible for promoting the library. In any higher institutions, library is a must for reference, resources, he asserted.
As part of the function, gifts were presented by the chief guest to elders of the locality who are above 80 years of age. It may be recalled that the Library was established in 1938 as Khwai Public Library and renamed as Imphal Public Library in 1947. It existed alongside the Nambul River until demolition on April 6, 1994, for the developmental expansion of the Imphal city.
The Imphal Public Library has been a pioneer in the library movement in Manipur and has deep-rooted historical significance. The revival of this library calls for the attention and good will from the public.
