Dimapur, July 24 (EMN): The Income Tax department observed on July 24 Income Tax Day to mark the anniversary of the creation of the first authority to administer income tax in India in the year 1860.
The establishment of the additional commissioner for Income Tax at Dimapur issued a press release to the media on Wednesday informing about the programme.
Kavita Jha, principal chief commissioner of Income Tax, north-eastern region, organized an array of activities that included tableau, street plays, and interactions with school students, tree plantation drives and distribution of informative pamphlets, the press release stated.
“Taxpayers are the bedrock of any nation and the Income Tax department considers them as partners in nation building. In keeping with this spirit, all the officers and staff of the Income Tax department of the north-eastern region have come together and contributed towards a consignment of 10,000 kilograms of flood relief materials to some of the worst affected victims and areas of floods in Assam,” the press release informed.
The press release informed that a truck carrying the relief materials was flagged off by Shishir Jha, principal commissioner of Income Tax at Guwahati, on July 24 from Aaykar Bhavan in Guwahati which is the headquarters of the Income Tax department in the north-eastern region.
In Dimapur, the occasion was celebrated with the observance of a ‘grievance redress week’ from July 22 with various activities such as a tree plantation drive at the Income Tax complex at Purana Bazar, and a Tableau and essay writing competition, the updates stated.
“The Income Tax department is responsible for administering direct taxes laws in India such as the Income Tax Act, Black Money Act and the Prohibition of Benami Property Transactions Act. Direct Taxes collections broke all records in the Financial Year 2018-19 and crossed INR 11 lakh crore,” the press release stated.
In recent years, the updates stated, the department has taken big strides in making tax administration more efficient and citizen friendly.
“Introduction of e-filing of returns, e-payment of taxes, online viewing of tax credits, online tracking of tax refunds, online application for issue of certificates for not deducting TDS, Aaykar Seva Kendras, Aaykar Samprak Kendra are some of the initiatives taken for modernisation of Tax Services,” the Income Tax establishment stated.
