DIMAPUR — Hukir village in Shamator district observed the 71st anniversary of what it described as the first Indo-Naga War (1955) on Tuesday.
According to an update, the programme, organised by the Yimkhiung Tribal Council (YTC), brought together community leaders, church representatives, and members of various Naga political groups in a day of remembrance and reflection.
The event was attended by Thejao Vihienuo, President of the Angami Public Organisation, as the special guest.
In his keynote address, Throngso Yimkhiung underscored the historical importance of the Indo-Naga War, urging the younger generation to preserve the legacy, sacrifices, and stories of those who fought for the Naga cause.
A detailed historical record was presented by Laji GS of YTC, documenting events from 1947 to 2010. The account shed light on the contribution and participation of the Yimchungru community in the Naga movement.

The narrative included references to interactions with AZ Phizo, who reportedly encouraged the Yimchungru people from "free areas" to take the initiative in the struggle. The account also reflected on the designation of leadership roles such as "War Lord" and the interpretation of traditional titles like gaon bura (GB).
The programme further revisited intense phases of the conflict, particularly the battles fought between 1956 and 1961 in Hoshiphu village and Longtukrü.
Tributes were paid to several fallen Naga leaders, including Major General P Punsokiu (killed in 1956 at Lizuto), Major General Y Hothrong (killed in 1961), Commandant W Hothrong (killed in 1956 at Longtukrü), and Commandant Muthrong (killed in 1967).
The gathering also featured an eyewitness account and a rendition of the Indo-Naga War anthem.
