DIMAPUR, OCTOBER 17
The state government of Nagaland and the government of India are set to provide 4, 300 affordable houses in Dimapur under the ‘Housing For All by 2022’ scheme which was launched earlier this year for the urban poor and slum dwellers. This was announced by Municipal Affairs Secretary Dr. Maongwati Aier on Saturday, October 17 during the inaugural program of Dimapur Municipal Council’s (DMC) continuing efforts to provide road surfacing in Dimapur.
The said scheme, which is meant for the urban poor, is based on three categories: for those who do not own a land and house, those who own land but without a house, and for those who have land but with a thatch house, Dr. Aier said.
Throwing more light on the scheme launched by the center, he also emphasized on Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUTH) scheme which will soon benefit the 23 wards of Dimapur city with the scheme ensuring that every household has access to a tap with secure supply of water and a sewerage connection.
While lauding the incessant activities of DMC led by its chief executive officer H Atokhe Aye in ‘smartening the city,’ Dr. Aier pointed out that the 14th Finance Commission has stopped providing grants to the state Urban local bodies as the Municipals have not gone through the election process for the last 6-7 years and this has been a factor of withdrawal for Municipals to develop.
The reason he cited for not conducting elections and receiving grants from the 14th Finance Commission was due to the Special Leave Petition filed by the Women’s Joint Forum for Reservation. With 3rd November 2015 set for Supreme Court’s hearing on the said matter, Dr. Aier expressed things to get into place.
While inaugurating the 8th project, the Municipal Affairs Secretary said that with the ‘state government’s effort’ in providing roads, drains and basic development amenities, it was time for users to uphold the efforts.
The DMC’s initiatives to generate own revenue to offer development continues to be in place with the 8th project of a series of infrastructural impetus. The project was inaugurated at Chatteswari colony and Supply Colony in Dimapur on Saturday, October 17, by Dr. Aier.
Chatteswari colony received two RCC box culverts and drain with slabs, a main culvert covering length of 26 ft, breadth of 3 ft, and height of 5 ft. The second culvert covered a length of 15 ft, breadth of 3 ft, and a height of 5 ft while the drain was a length of 226 ft. Supply colony received a drain with slabs. The total length of the drain covered 150 ft with a clear breadth of 2 ft and height of 5 ft.
It may be noted that three landowners of Chatteswari colony had donated plots of land for the road-widening project and towards the construction of two RCC box culverts and drains.
Delivering the inaugural speech, DMC’s CEO H Atokhe Aye sought cooperation from the public in the municipal council’s efforts to ‘smarten the city.’ He urged citizens to inculcate a sense of belongingness and civic sense to make Dimapur a ‘beautiful city.’
