- KOHIMA — The 25th Hornbill Festival, held at
Kisama Heritage Village in Kohima from December 1 to 10 last year, has been
declared as ‘Single Use Plastics Free & Garbage Free Clean Festival’.
- Green Earth Organisation, a Kurukshetra-based NGO working in
the field of environment, health, safety and sanitation, issued a certificate
on January 6 declaring the same.
- “For this achievement, planned & dedicated efforts of
Urban Development & Municipal Affairs department and NGO Green Guard,
Nagaland, are highly appreciated,” it stated.

- The organisation added the certificate was issued upon
verification of self-declaration and evidence submitted by Green Guard and an
independent field assessment conducted on December 8, 2024 (virtually) in
compliance with the protocol prescribed under guidelines for the certification.
- In a separate notification addressed to the president of
Green Guard, the Green Earth congratulated the team for attaining the
achievement.
- “We are very thankful to the team of Urban Development &
Municipal Affairs department, Nagaland, and NGO Green Guard, Kohima (Nagaland)
for great contributing in ‘Beat the Plastic Pollution - Plastic Free Bharat and
Garbage Free Bharat’ campaign in befitting to national call by Prime Minister
of India at the occasion of India’s 73rd Independence Day (15th August, 2019),”
the letter read.
- It expressed hope for more sincere efforts from Green Guard
and Urban Development & Municipal Affairs department as well as other
associated organisations/persons for sustaining this status in the future and
will work continuously for attaining and sustaining a “SUPs Free & Garbage
Free” environment.
- The Green Earth assured that its team will be available to
extend technical assistance/guidance for attaining and sustaining a “SUP Free
& Clean-Green” environment from time to time.
- It may be recalled that through the collaborative efforts of
three teams—Green Guard, Human Matrix Securite, and Züb Züb India—the
zero-waste approach adopted at the 25th Hornbill Festival could help prevent
the usage of approximately 1 lakh single-use plastic items on a daily basis at
Kisama.
