Dimapur, April 16
Braving an evening downpour, Holy Cross Higher Secondary School’s family in Dimapur gathered at the school’s premises to celebrate the institution’s golden jubilee celebration, on Saturday. The auspicious day started with the lighting of a lamp by the first principal of the then Holy Cross School Rev.Fr.PC Mani, followed by a tribute to the departed by former Headmistress Rev.Sr. Noeline BS.
Home Minister of Nagaland Y Patton, an alumnus, attended the occasion as the chief guest. He expressed pride to be a ‘product’ of the school as the school had always maintained a brilliant record of academic achievement. Recalling his good old times at the school, Patton remarked that the significance of the occasion reminded the Holy Cross family that individuals who make history owe much to the past.
“As we look back in the glory of the past 50 years of existence of this institution, let us look inwards and introspect to analyze what could have done better and how we could overcome on our ways of progress,” the legislator said.
Quoting Douglas Adams “the best way to predict a future is to build it”, Patton said that the world today was different from what it was 50 years ago. ‘As we are a global village today we now live in an age of knowledge and the rate of change will accelerate in time to come.’
In the years to come schools generally should not only be an institution of learning but also provide individualized environment observed Patton. He also conveyed that life skills must become a central focus of educational efforts. Teachers play a pivotal role and their emphasis should not only be on the expansion of and providing access to the educational system but more importantly on improving the knowledge base and quality of our teachers.
“Let us not forget that good teachers are costly but bad teachers cost the nation even much more” articulated the legislator.
Also, Patton remarked that Holy Cross Higher Secondary School must set an exemplary foundation that every individual has every reason to look back on his 50 years with pride and satisfaction. Thousands of students have been nurtured by the institution, Patton said. The school should look forward to strive, work and achieve even more, the politician added.
A cultural segment and speeches by alumni marked the event too.
