IMPHAL, April 5
Agitation over the murder of Pampha Rai was launched by the JAC today imposing a 24-hour bandh along National Highway 2 from 6 pm Tuesday.
The Joint Action Committee (JAC) against the brutal killing of the 32-year-old woman has demanded that the Manipur government punish the accused without delay.
Palujam Jameson Singh, hailing from Langjing Achouba under Imphal West, has been accused of murdering Pamphai Rai, a resident of 2nd MR, Imphal West.
She was mysteriously found dead inside a room of Venus Hotel, Lamka in Churachandpur district on April 2. Jameson and Rai checked into the hotel before she was found killed inside the hotel room.
The police have registered a case over the incident and are on lookout of the accused who is absconding since the murder took place.
Terming the incident a heinous crime, Sadar Hills Gorkha Union condemned the murder of Pamphai Rai demanding justice. It pledged to help the JAC in enforcing its stir and attempt to get justice.
The accused’s parents said a love affair between Jameson and Rai started about three years back after their son split from his first wife. “They had been living like husband and wife.”
Jameson and his family were banished from their own locality yesterday by the residents in connection with the murder of Rai.
The parents made an ardent appeal to the local residents to allow them to return to their own home today. But a public meeting held at Langjing Achouba decided to take action against those individuals who are found giving shelter to the accused and his family. The people of Manipur are accustomed to ostracizing local members who bring bad name to the society by committing crimes like murder since a long time.
“We’re not involved in the alleged murder of Rai. We’re ready to cooperate with the police in the investigation. We beg our neighbours to allow us to return to the locality and live there along with our elder son,” the mother of the accused, Palujam Dalaleima Devi said at a press meet at Manipur Press Club here.
