India’s promising diver, Kongbrailatpam Ramananda Sharma of Manipur, who is dreaming of a medal for the country in the Rio De Janeiro Olympics in 2016, is all set to compete with his competitors in the ongoing 20th Commonwealth Games(CWG) at Glasgow, United Kingdom on July 30 and 31. He will be competing in 1 metre springboard and 3 metres springboard diving categories.
Gold medalist in 3 metre spring board event in the 7th AASF Asian Age Group Championships at Jakarta in 2011, 17 year old diver Ramanada, is expected to bring home a medal from the CMW games. He is the youngest child of Rajbihari and Ranjana, a resident of Chingmeirong Mamang Leikai in Imphal.
A services diver Ramananda, who won many medals in the 39th Junior Asian Aquatic Championship (July1-5, 2012), is among the 14 Manipur players taking part in the CWG. He had enrolled at the Army Sports Institute in Pune at the age of 8 years and had been getting training at the institute under the guidance of a Cuban coach.
"We're expecting at least a medal from him (Ramananda) observing his previous diving performances", felt a functionary of Manipur Olympic association. "We are also congratulating the performance of our state lifters and judokas".
On the second day of the CWG, Manipur's weightlifters Kh Sanjita and S Mirabai bagged a gold and a silver medals by lifting 173 and 170kgs in their 48kg category.
Other Manipuri sportspersons in the Indian squad are L Devendro Singh, L Sarita (Boxing); Sunita Yanglem (cycling); Kh Kothajit, K Chinglensana, Sushila Chanu Pukhrabam, Th Anuradha (Hockey); Jina Chongtham, Sunibala Huidrom(Judo); ); Dr S Santikumar (Team Manger Gymnastics) and N Kunjarani Devi (Team Coach weightlifting).
