IMPHAL, MARCH 21
AN Imphal court today recorded the statement of suspended constable of Manipur Police Thounaojam Herojit Singh, the main accused in the killing of Chungkham Sanjit Meitei ‘fake encounter’ case.
District & Sessions Judge, Imphal West, M Manjoj Singh said the matter was adjourned for further hearing to March 29.
Herojit, one of the accused in the case involving nine personnel of the state police, pleaded with the court that action should be taken against his seniors who ‘ordered him’ to carry out the fake encounter.
Sanjit, a 22-year-old former cadre of People’s Liberation Army (PLA), was killed in the broad day light alleged stage-managed encounter that took place on July 23, 2009 on BT Road in Khwairamband bazar here.
Herojit Singh recently made confessional statements before a select media that he shot dead the youth on orders of his seniors in the infamous Khwairamaband incident. He is facing trial in the case.
Dr Akoijam Jhalajit Singh, the then Additional Superintendent of Police, Imphal West is accused of ordering the cop to ‘finish off’ Sanjit Meitei. But he denied the accusation. Jhalajit is currently Superintendent of Police, Imphal West.
Heojit demanded that punitive action be taken against the police officer. The cop was also expressed keenness for re-investigation of the CBI-probed case.
CBI counsel P Ibomcha stated that re-investigating the case would be a preconceived idea while responding to a petition filed by Ch Taratombi Devi, the mother of Sanjit, in the same court seeking re-investigation into the case under Section 173 (Code of Criminal Procedure) based on the disclosure by Herojit Singh.
The Working Committee of Apuba Lup, a conglomerate of several civil socities of Manipur, recently said the response of the Manipur government did not live up to the people’s expectations over the Chungkham Sanjit and Thokchom Rabina Devi killing case.
A pregnant woman Rabina who was an innocent bystander was also killed in the Khwairamband firing incident. The nine police personnel, all commandos, have been accused of killing the duo in the alleged fake encounter.
