KDLSA observes World Consumer Rights Day

[dropcap]K[/dropcap]ohima District Legal Services Authority (KDLSA) in collaboration with Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation (NVCO) and Kohima Law College (KLC) observed World Consumer Rights Day along with the rest of the world today at DC Conference Hall, Kohima, under the theme ‘Helping consumers choose healthy diets’.
The programme was chaired by Tongpang L Jamir, panel lawyer KDLSA who spoke on the importance of a platform to discuss on the consumer rights, duties and responsibilities. He expressed on the activities of the Legal Services Authorities at the national, state and district levels.Meanwhile, the welcome address was delivered by Kovi Meyase, NCS, Administrator, Kohima Municipal Council.
While delivering the welcome address, he stressed that the day is observed to discuss on the consumer’s rights and responsibilities. He stated that the consumers need to be heard, educated and also seek redressal at the proper forums. He further said, that there is a responsibility to be a vigilant consumer and it is wrong to be just mute consumers.
Short speeches were delivered by .M Imchen, NJS, Chairman KDLSA & District and Sessions Judge , Kohima on the “Concerns of KDLSA”. He stressed on eight basic rights namely safety, satisfaction of basic needs, redress, information, consumer education, choice, healthy environment and to be heard.
Kezhokhoto Savi, President NVCO, who spoke on the topic, “Consumer activities in Kohima” and touched upon mass participation in getting our rights redressed.
Guest speaker Justice L.S. Jamir, Judge, Gauhati High Court, touched on Article 47 of the Constitution of India which deals with improvement of public health.
He stated that the Consumers Act is provided to protect the rights of the consumers. He said that every person be it a trader or business man, govt owned corporation as well as government is responsible towards the consumers.
“There is a need of right to be assured, right to variety of goods, right to be heard, right to receive due consideration, right to seek for redressal and right to consumer education. The answer to any problem is to educate the consumers of what, how and where to buy. To enhance the efficacy of the consumers, effective consumer movements such as Nagaland Voluntary Consumers Organisation should be encouraged which would bring a sea change in our society today and for the future as well. The consumer should be educated and be informed because everyone has the right to be informed.”
He also emphasised upon the theme of how to maintain health and right to healthy food and further took serious note on overweight, high bp, high sugar and high cholesterol levels in a person today.
He said that poor diet in our country has led to 11 million deaths in a year and stated that responsibility rest with the government and its agencies. He also dealt on the importance of how to build a healthy plate with fruits and vegetables then the usual meat. He said that we have to address to issues of eating right amount of calories, how to be physically fit and how important it is to educate the parents of what type of food is given to the children.
“It is important to educate the innocent and ignorant consumers about purchase of goods and its longetivity, the date of expiry and values, whether potent medicines are provided by govt hospitals, whether safe drinking and sufficient water is provided by the government.”
During interactive session, questions were raised such as whether parking slots are allotted through proper procedures? Whether parking fees which are collected are properly channelized? Why there is uneven weighing in products like meat? Who fixes the rates of products in Kohima? What is the price index and its mechanism to check? Whether there are District Voluntary Consumers Organisations?
The audience was enlightened and felt that all should stand up together and be a sincere and responsible consumer and should learn how to question and get the correct answer for what you are purchasing.
