Kohima, April 16 (EMN): The state capital today witnessed a mad rush for pork at New Market colony as every customer tried to elbow their way to the counter for their share. Pork was opened for sale after weeks as the supply was stopped with the lockdown following the Covid-19 pandemic.
Butchers had a harrowing time dealing with the incessant demand of the rushing customers who arrived in as much as hundreds to buy pork at New Market colony. The meatpackers were caught in a stressful situation, who had to cater to the taxing demands of pork to the jam-packed customers at the slaughtering farm at New Market.
Early birds coming from different places in Kohima at the location were lucky enough to procure their share whereas many customers went home empty handed owing to the early shortage of the meat.
The owner informed Eastern Mirror that about 40 pigs which arrived the previous night were sold out within 11 am on Thursday. Apart from supplying the meat for home delivery and few other places, he said many people came to buy in huge quantities which resulted in the shortage of meat.
Meanwhile, a handful of colony volunteers enforcing social distancing at the site complained that many customers were not maintaining the rule in the queues while getting to buy the meat. There were also reports of verbal argument among the customers.
