Kohima, Aug. 27 (EMN): More families are being affected and evacuated in various parts of Kohima district as heavy rains continue. 43 houses at Perizie colony, High School, in Kohima have been affected with five houses having been damaged completely, while 38 houses partially damaged. The affected families have been evacuated as of Monday.
Talking to
Eastern Mirror, Perizie colony’s Chairman Akhie Liezietsu said five houses have collapsed and the families and their belongings evacuated to a safer place at the Khedi Baptist fellowship house, below the government polytechnic in Kohima. Some families were later shifted to rented houses arranged by members of the colony.
Many houses in the colony, he said, are on the verge of collapse. He said that some residents were still in their partially-damaged houses that are said to be supported by bamboo poles and wooden posts.
Liezietsu informed that landslide in the colony began since July following the rains. The landslides at the KMC garbage dumping site, he said, are gradually affecting the colony. Since Monday, he said, vehicular movement has been stopped completely as the road leading to the colony had been damaged badly.
It was informed that Rüzhükhrie government higher secondary school, government polytechnic, Christ for the Nation Bible College; the directorate of Fishery, and the IG Stadium have been affected by the landslides.
Liezietsu was apprehensive that more houses will go down if the rain continues and that there would be a major disaster. He informed that deputy commissioner of Kohima and the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority visited the colony and donated cash and relief materials. With the money given by donors, Liezietsu said, the colony is trying to repair the damaged road as the residents, especially students, are facing a lot of hardships.
