WOKHA — Incessant rainfall triggered multiple landslides and damaged infrastructure across Wokha district on Thursday, disrupting road connectivity and raising fresh concerns over the vulnerability of the Wokha–Merapani road.
A major landslide occurred at Sanis '0' Point in the early hours of Thursday, with large boulders and debris blocking the Wokha–Merapani road and leaving several vehicles stranded.
Another mudslide was reported between Chudi and Longtsung villages under Sanis subdivision, further disrupting vehicular movement. Continuous rainfall also caused two electricity poles to collapse at Chudi village.
The Wokha–Merapani road, considered a lifeline for the district, is frequently damaged during the monsoon due to soil erosion and recurring landslides from adjoining hill slopes. It serves as a vital link between Wokha district headquarters and Sanis and Bhandari subdivisions. Any prolonged disruption could isolate several villages and affect the movement of people, essential supplies and emergency services.

Wokha on alert as relentless rain leaves trail of destruction
According to the Lotha Middle Range Public Organisation (LMRPO), restoration work is underway under the supervision of the additional deputy commissioner, Sanis, to restore normal traffic at the earliest.
The organisation said that it had earlier submitted representations to the deputy commissioner of Wokha, seeking intervention and assistance for people affected by the natural calamities within its jurisdiction.
Restoration efforts are continuing, and commuters have been advised to exercise caution while travelling through the affected areas until clearance operations are completed.
