KOHIMA — Citizens can now report pollution-related activities directly through a new mobile application called HAWA Grievances, launched by the Nagaland Pollution Control Board (NPCB) at Kisama on Tuesday.
The Healthier Air & Water Appraisal (HAWA) Grievances platform has been developed under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) and formally introduced on National Pollution Control Day 2025.
Launching the app, Member Secretary of NPCB, K Hukato Chishi, said residents who witness any activity causing pollution can upload photographs and location details in real time. He expressed hope that the initiative would have a positive impact on the state’s environment and urged the public to register and actively submit complaints.
Chishi said the app was “the need of the hour” as it enables wider public participation in monitoring and reporting environmental violations. He added that the board would forward received complaints to the respective urban local bodies or district administration for necessary action. He also informed that NPCB intends to upgrade the app to integrate other departments for coordinated responses.
NPCB Scientist B, Yanathung Kithan, said the app was designed specifically for non-attainment cities such as Kohima and Dimapur and their adjoining areas, where public grievances often relate to air and water pollution. He said many citizens are unsure of where to lodge complaints, and the app provides a single accessible platform for doing so.

He added that mandatory live location ensures authenticity, preventing instances where images from the internet or social media are submitted. Any citizen can register and lodge complaints at any time.
The app, developed by Zeliang Codetech Pvt. Ltd., is free to download from the Play Store. Citizens can also use it to check air quality levels in their districts.
During the launch programme, the results of a reel-making competition on pollution were announced. First place went to Khriesevinuo Gloria Dzüvichü, Grace and Gracy Aye; second place to Chongpongmanen, Aosanen and Putilemla; and third place to Kelly Pfithu, Nzeineile, Alingla T Sangtam and P Vishikali Assumi.

Consolation prizes were awarded to Aoinla, Khumchose, Noune Metha, Vetholü Theluo, Kunukhwulu Veswuh and Kevisetuo Keviu Rüpreo.
