Dimapur, Jan 24: The first district level volleyball tournament for men in memory of late Haiziurangbe got underway at Deukwaram village under Peren district on January 24.
The tournament officials informed media persons that a total of 16 teams from various villages under Peren district are participating in the tournament.
The inaugural programme was graced by Masangum Hiekha, Personal Secretary to Chief Minister, as the chief guest.
Speaking on the occasion, the chief guest has compared our physical body to a machine which functions accordingly to application of technology. He said any sportspersons indulging in other intoxications will not only destroy their body but finally lose out in the race.He said winning or losing in the tournament is not important as long as the players uphold the spirit of sportsmanship. While acknowledging that there will be only one winner in the competition, the chief guest advised the participants to compete in the spirit of true sportsmanship.
He has also cautioned against resorting to fault game which will not only bring bad name to themselves but also lose respect.
In an oblique reference to the ensuing general State elections in 2018, Masangum appealed the public to march together in unity for the common interest of the people in the district. More importantly, he advised the public not to believe in rumour but to work in unity for the larger interest of the people.
The five-day district level tournament will culminate on January 28 where Er. Talitoba Sanglir, president of Ao Union Kohima, will be the guest of honour.
