IMPHAL, OCTOBER 15: The Guru Herachandra Memorial Award has been conferred on Yumnam Jatra Singh. The award was received by his son as the ailing guru is presently under treatment at a local hospital.
The award was distributed during the XXIII Guru Kirtana Seva 2016, the festival of Nata Sankirtana which was observed at the Maharaja Chandrakirti Auditorium, Palace Compound, in Imphal on Friday night.
The event was organised by the Gulapi Nata Sankirtana Academy, the Kwakeithel Nganapi Thong Mapal of Imphal.
Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam, Commissioner for IPR & Works K Radhakumar Singh and renowned cultural activist Aribam Chitreshwor Sharma attended the observation.
In his speech, Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam said Manipur was a culturally unique place and the youth of the state should take a vital role in preserving and promoting their unique culture.
Gaikhangam, who holds the Home Affairs portfolio, further said that the present government was serious about promoting the rich culture of the state. The Manipur University of Culture, Manipur State Film Institute, etc., are the outcome of the sincere efforts of the government, he said.
Appreciating the noble gesture of the Gulapi Nata Sankirtana Academy to organise such a event, he said ‘we need to introspect and learn from our elders to preserve and popularise our own culture.’
Commissioner for IPR & Works K Radhakumar Singh also said in his address that the unique culture of Manipur can showcase ‘our unique identity to the world.’
