IMPHAL — A Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, who sustained critical injuries after being hit by a bullet fired from an “unknown direction” in Manipur’s Ukhrul district, succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in Imphal, officials said on Saturday.
The incident occurred when a company of the BSF’s 170 Battalion was on patrol duty at Mongkot Chepu area under Litan Police Station in Ukhrul district around 4.30 pm on Friday, according to sources.
The personnel was hit by a bullet during a firing incident that reportedly broke out between two suspected armed groups in the area. Police have registered a case, and investigation is underway.

“Search operations and area domination by security forces are underway to nab the militants behind the attack,” police said in a statement late Friday night.
The injured BSF personnel has been identified as Mithun Mandal, a resident of Bhagjan Tola village in West Bengal.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh strongly condemned the incident.
In a social media post, Khemchand wrote, “Despite the best efforts of medical personnel, the brave jawan succumbed to his injuries at around 6 pm at RIMS, Imphal. His supreme sacrifice in the line of duty will always be remembered with the highest honour and gratitude.”
It may be mentioned that tension between members of the Tangkhul Naga and Kuki communities remains high following a violent clash at Litan Sareikhong along the Imphal–Ukhrul road in Ukhrul district earlier this February.
