Mokokchung, Nov. 19 (EMN): A store called Green Craft which deals in eco-friendly products was inaugurated by Tsukti Longkumer, president of the Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Mokokchung. The store was dedicated by Rev Ponen Longchar, pastor of the Mokokchung Town Baptist Arogo, at the Longkumer Kilem Shopping Arcade, on Monday.
The proprietor of the store is Noktila Longkumer. In her address, Noktila described Green Craft as a store that promotes eco-friendly products. They are made of bamboo, cane and wood. It also aims to promote local craftsmen, artisans and entrepreneurs and provide sustainable employment to the community, she said.
The store deals in interior décor, furniture for offices, restaurants; and designs furniture made of bamboo, cane and wood. The products in the newly launched store start from the price INR 40.
During an interaction, Green Craft’s proprietor asserted that the global market was moving towards sustainable and eco-friendly products. She lamented that many gifted Naga craftsmen do not have many avenues to sell their products here.
In this connection, Noktila said, Green Craft will provide the avenue to local artisans to trade modern products without compromising with traditional art concepts.
Also, Noktila said Nagaland has an abundance of natural resource but it has failed in exploiting it sustainably. Therefore, she plans to set-up a manufacturing unit equipped with state of the art machinery to train gifted and unemployed youths into becoming skilled artisans and craftsmen. The idea is that they can compete in the more competitive markets with the finished products.
The chief guest of the event, Tsukti Longkumer, lauded Green Craft’s proprietor for adding a new feature to Mokokchung’s market. It will not only benefit customers but local craftsmen as much, he said.
He said Mokokchung was neither a flourishing market nor a ‘dying market.’ The biggest reason is that people do not prefer to buy from the local market, he said. In this connection, Tsukti said that opening a store that offered eco-friendly products against great odds was a huge challenge for the proprietor. He wished the proprietor all the very best in her endeavour.
