The GPRN/NSCN (Khole-Kitovi) on Tuesday stated that it has been “deeply disturbed” by New Delhi’s decision to promulgate the “inhuman” Armed Forces Special Powers Act and the Disturbed Area Act in Nagaland while arguing that empowering the army with the provisions of those two Acts “to crush the aspirations of the people has never worked and they never will.”
A press release from the outfit’s MIP called it an extremely insensitive decision on the part of the GOI against the Naga people. “If Mr SS Khaplang, sitting in his hutment in Burma, abrogates the ceasefire with the GOI, does it merit GOI to enforce draconian laws in Nagaland? The GPRN/NSCN is in a ceasefire with the GOI and so are few others. Negotiated political settlement that is acceptable and honorable to the people of Nagaland is the only way towards stability in the region.”
Ceasefire between the two entities is in operation in Nagaland and despite undue provocations, the GPRN/NSCN observes ceasefire ground rules in letter and spirit, it stated. “The Naga people are too aware of the reign of terror of the Indian military in the past. Nagas have defended their land and people with utmost courage and sacrifice. Military atrocity upon indigenous Naga populace would be counterproductive.”
It also reminded that though Nagaland is a tiny nation, its history and existence is just as distinct as Indian, British or American history. “It is a universal fact that when the land and history is threatened, resistance, be it violent or peaceful, is inevitable,” the statement said.
