The annual verification and stamping of weights, measures, and weighing and measuring instruments for the year 2016 is being undertaken by the department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection as per the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 and the Nagaland Legal Metrology (Enforcement) Rules, 2011.
Traders, vendors, and users of weight, measures, and weighing and measuring instruments are directed to submit their weights, measures and instruments for verification and stamping, the department’s chief Bizo M Kuotsu stated in a notice issued through the media on Tuesday. They are to report to the office of the Assistant Controller of Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection in the respective districts as required by Section 24 of the Legal Metrology (Enforcement) Rules of 2011.
“Users of unverified weights and measures shall be prosecuted under sections 33,34 and 35 of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009,” the department warned.
Further, dealers and repairers of weights and measures are to submit applications to the department for the renewal of dealership and repairers’ licences or for issue of fresh licenses under section 23 of the Legal Metrology act, 2009.
Packers, manufacturers, and importers of packaged commodities including food and bakery products are asked to submit applications for Packers’ License to be issued by the department as per the Legal Metrology (Packaged commodities) Rules, 2011. Packaged commodities should bear the mandatory declaration on the packages such as the name of the commodity, the maximum retail price (MRP), month and year of manufacture, the net quantity, and the name and address of the manufacturer or packer or importer.
Defaulters failing to comply with the laid down rules shall be penalized as per the Legal metrology Act & Rules, the press release stated.
