Dimapur, April 6 (EMN): Governor of Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh, PB Acharya in his message on World Health Day, said April 7 is observed across the world to mark the ‘birth’ anniversary of the World Health Organization (WHO) since its founding in 1948 and each year, WHO selects a theme that highlights a priority area of public health concern in the world. He stated that the theme for 2017 is ‘Depression: Let’s Talk’ with aims to mobilize action on depression. The Governor said that depression is an illness that can happen to people of all ages, from all walks of life, in all countries. It causes mental anguish and affects people’s ability to carry out everyday tasks, with sometimes devastating consequences for relationship with family and friend. He added that depression can lead to self inflected injuries and suicide. However, he said fortunately depression can be prevented and treated which usually involves either talking therapy or antidepressant medication or a combination of these.
Acharya called on the people to have better understanding of depression which will help reduce the stigma associated with the illness, and lead to more people seeking help.
