Governor Nand Kishore Yadav reviews Nagaland’s school education reforms and tourism development plans in Kohima.

DIMAPUR — A high-level review meeting on the progress and performance of the School Education department was held on Monday at the Naga Bhavan conference hall, Lok Bhavan, Kohima.
The review meeting, chaired by Governor Nand Kishore Yadav, focused on the current status of school education in the state, including governance structures, student enrolment trends, teacher strength and key initiatives aimed at improving learning outcomes and strengthening the education system, an update from Lok Bhvan stated.
The department officials presented an overview of the state’s education landscape, highlighting the number of schools, teachers, and students across government and private institutions.
The meeting also reviewed ongoing reforms to strengthen data-driven governance through the Education Management Information System (EMIS) and improve monitoring and planning within the education sector.
Key initiatives undertaken by the Department of School Education were discussed, including the provision of free textbooks and learning materials for students in government schools, distribution of uniforms and notebooks under elementary education programmes and the implementation of the PM POSHAN scheme to support student nutrition and school attendance.

The meeting also reviewed progress under the Nagaland Education Project – The Lighthouse (NECTAR), a World Bank–supported initiative focused on strengthening school governance, improving teacher professional development, enhancing digital learning systems and promoting community participation in education.
During the meeting, officials highlighted capacity-building programmes for teachers and school leaders, including professional learning communities and digital platforms designed to enhance teaching practices and leadership in schools.
The governor emphasised the importance of improving learning outcomes, strengthening school governance and ensuring effective implementation of educational initiatives across the state.
Kumar encouraged continued efforts to enhance the quality of education and ensure that government programmes reach students effectively.
Senior officials from The Directorate of School Education (DoSE) headed by the principal director, Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE) headed by the chairperson, State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) headed by the director, Samagra Siksha headed by Mission Director and Nagaland Education Project-The Lighthouse (NECTAR) headed by the project director, attended the meeting and presented updates on various programmes and reform initiatives.
“The review reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening the school education system in Nagaland and ensuring quality, inclusive and accessible education for all students across the state,” the update stated.
Tourism department outlines future plans

The Department of Tourism presented an overview of its key initiatives, achievements, challenges, and future plans during a review meeting held with Governor of Nagaland Nand Kishore Yadav, at Lok Bhavan, Kohima, on Monday.
During the meeting, Secretary of Tourism, Nchumbemo Lotha, briefed the governor on the progress of tourism development in the state and highlighted various initiatives aimed at strengthening Nagaland’s position as a leading destination for eco-tourism, cultural tourism and community-based tourism, the Lok Bhavan stated in an update.
The department reiterated its vision of promoting sustainable tourism that preserves the state’s rich cultural heritage while protecting its natural environment.
Nagaland, widely known as the “Land of Festivals,” offers unique tourism experiences ranging from vibrant tribal traditions to scenic landscapes and biodiversity.
Officials highlighted several major tourist attractions including Dzukou Valley, popularly known as the “Valley of Flowers,” Khonoma Green Village, recognised as India’s first green village, Mount Saramati, the highest peak in the state and Diezephe Craft Village, known for its traditional handloom and handicrafts.
The meeting also highlighted the success of community-driven tourism initiatives in villages such as Khonoma and Dzuleke, where conservation and sustainable tourism practices have created livelihood opportunities for local communities.
Officials informed the governor that Nagaland receives approximately 2.25 lakh domestic tourists annually, while international tourist arrivals range between 2,000 and 5,000 visitors per year.
The department also presented updates on key infrastructure development projects undertaken under State Plan, DoNER/NEC schemes and the Ministry of Tourism’s Swadesh Darshan initiatives.
These include the upgradation of tourism facilities at Kisama Heritage Village, development of tourist amenity centres, eco-tourism projects and tourism infrastructure across several districts.
In addition, plans for major upcoming projects were discussed, including the development of iconic tourist centres, promotion of homestay programmes across districts and proposals for ropeway connectivity between Kisama Heritage Village and Dzukou Valley, as well as at Doyang Reservoir.
While acknowledging the vast tourism potential of the state, the department also highlighted certain challenges such as infrastructure gaps, the need for improved connectivity and the importance of stronger marketing and digital promotion strategies.
Yadav appreciated the efforts of the Department of Tourism in promoting sustainable and community-based tourism and encouraged continued initiatives to strengthen tourism infrastructure and showcase Nagaland’s unique cultural and natural heritage to visitors from across the country and abroad.
The meeting concluded with a discussion on future strategies to further enhance tourism development and ensure greater community participation in the sector.
