Dimapur, Jan. 28: The 102nd birth anniversary of Rani Gaidinliu was observed at Raj Bhavan, Kohima, on January 26 with floral tributes in which Piyush Goyal, Commissioner & Secretary to Governor, gave a brief account of Rani Gaidinliu’s life and activities.
He explained that late Rani Gaidinliu was born on January 26, 1915, in Manipur and was a Naga spiritual and political leader who led a revolt against British rule in India. She was arrested in 1932 at the age of 16 and was sentenced for life imprisonment by the British rulers. She was released in 1947, after India’s Independence, where she continued to work for the uplift of her people. She had spend her youthful 15 years in jail, as freedom fighter. In 1937, the first Prime Minister late Pandit Nehru went to Shillong and later persuaded her release from jail and gave her the title of “Rani”.
State Governor PB Acharya, and Raj Bhavan staff paid floral tribute to the great freedom fighter. The Governor also shed light on her life and activities. The Governor also mentioned about his first meeting with her in the year 1965, during late P Shilu Ao’s government when she was under ‘house arrest’ in Minister’s Hill, Kohima.
