Dimapur, May 30 (EMN): State governor, PB Acharya, has appealed to all section of the people to take collective responsibility in reducing the burden of disease, death and economic consequences caused by tobacco use and exposure to second-hand smoke globally.
In his message to the Naga people on the occasion of ‘World No Tobacco Day,’ Acharya has called upon the Naga people to ‘take collective action to reduce the burden of disease, death and economic consequences caused by tobacco use and exposure to second-hand smoke globally.”
A Raj Bhavan press release has quoted the governor calling upon the government, civil societies and public to spread awareness and take all possible initiatives to highlight the enormous damage to health, development, and the economy caused by the use of tobacco.
Acharya stated that the ‘World No Tobacco Day’ is a global campaign, inviting everyone from global leaders to the public in all countries to focus on the health risks associated with tobacco use and to advocate for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption.
The governor advised that the coming generations must be protected from the devastating consequences of tobacco consumption and exposure to tobacco smoke. He further reminded that all must reaffirm the commitment to reduce the menace.
Meanwhile, Dimapur district has announced to observe the ‘World No Tobacco Day’ under the theme “Tobacco and heart diseases” on May 31 with the chief judicial magistrate and secretary of DDLSA, Ajongba Imchen, and the chief medical officer of Dimapur, Dr. Vikato Kinimi, as the chief guest and guest of honour respectively.
According to a DIPR report, the programme would be held at Greenwood Higher Secondary School, Nagarjan. It stated that Zuchumpeni Ezung and Sentimenla Tzudir, DDLSA panel lawyers, would be the resource persons during the function. They were scheduled to speak on COPTA Act 2003 and POCSO Act/child abuse respectively.
The programme would be chaired by chairman of DNF, Dimapur, Fr. Joe, while the keynote address would be delivered by the state nodal officer of NTCP, Dr. Hotokhu Chishi. The programme is being organized by District Tobacco Control Cell, Dimapur.
