Dimapur, Aug. 21 (EMN): The Nagaland government has remitted sentences against certain categories of convicts, in commemoration of India’s Independence anniversary, updates stated.
The government publicity agency, the department of Information and Public Relations (IPR), issued updates on Wednesday informing about the remission of sentence.
Home Commissioner Abhijit Sinha has informed through a notification that the state’s government has decided to remit the sentences of certain categories of prisoners who have been convicted by the courts other than Court Martial having criminal jurisdiction in the state of Nagaland and sentenced to rigorous imprisonment.

This decision is in commemoration of the Independence Day anniversary for 2019, the IPR stated.
The governor of Nagaland has granted remission of sentences of different categories of convicts lodged in the jails of Nagaland and outside “other than those in respect of whom the sentence is inflicted for an offence against the Order referred to in Sub-section 6 of Section 432 of the said code passed under any law relating to which the Executive Powers of the Union extends.”
The remission that has been granted shall not be admissible to the following categories of convicts: Prisoners convicted under Foreigners Act; Prisoners convicted under Passport Act; Prisoners convicted under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act; Prisoners convicted under Section 3 to 10 of Official Secrets Act, 1923; Prisoners convicted under Section 2 to 3 of Criminal Amendment Act, 1961; Prisoners convicted under Section 121 to 130 of IPC; Prisoners convicted under Section 107/109 of CrPC; Prisoners convicted under Prevention of Corruption Act; Prisoners convicted of rape, attempt to rape or assault on women; Convicted prisoners found violating jail rules and discipline such as threatening/ intimidation/quarrelling/beating of fellow prisoners/staff and smuggling of contraband and prohibited articles; Foreign National convicted under any Acts.
The remission order will take effect from the 15th of August 2019 by order and in the name of the governor, the IPR added.
