Dimapur, Nov. 27 (EMN): With the relatively peaceful situation, State government has questioned the necessity on extension of notification declaring Nagaland as ‘Disturbed Area’ under Armed Forces (Special Power) Act 1958.
In a letter to the Secretary (Home), Government of India, Special Secretary to Government of Nagaland, SR Saravanan stated that Government of Nagaland have been persistently opposed such proposals for extension of notification declaring Nagaland as “Disturbed Area” in the past and continues to oppose further extension of the notification in the State.
Stating that the overall situation in Nagaland is by and large peaceful compared to other States of the country, the letter stated that the law enforcement agencies of the State are satisfactorily dispensing its duties.
With most of the underground factions are in truce with Government of India, except NSCN(K), it stated that the joining of six Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) in the ongoing talks on the Naga political issue and the support of civil society organisations is a significant sign of peaceful atmosphere.
In view of the relatively peaceful situation, the State government was of the view that extension of notification declaring Nagaland as “Disturbed Area’ is not necessary.
