Dimapur, Sep. 2 (EMN): A government residential girls’ hostel in Phek, accommodating 50 underprivileged students from different villages, has been functioning without proper funds since August 2017, an organisation has stated. The Phek Town Youth Society (PTYS) and Phek Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) have claimed that the students of this hostel have been surviving with lentil (dal) soup and rice owing to non-release of funds by the government.
The vice president of PCCI, Kuvechisa and the president of PTYS, Neizote Venuh have appealed the state government to release the pending funds for the welfare of the students and smooth functioning of the hostel. The two organisations visited the hostel on Sep. 2 after learning about the plight of the students.
During their visit, the PTYS and PCCI donated books and other school materials; washing and bathing materials; first aid kits; blankets, clothes, and footwear; electrical appliances like emergency light, candles; groceries and cosmetics; and eatable items. The members also interacted with the students and officials of District Education Officer under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA).
Deputy Commissioner of Phek, Orenthung Lotha, who was also present, assured to extend any viable assistance to the students.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Avelu motivated the students by narrating a anecdote of a underprivile ged student whose zeal and hard work made him an IAS officer.
