Dimapur, Nov. 2: Government Hindi Institute (GHI), Dimapur, achieved its 50th year milestone on November 2 since its establishment in 1968. The golden jubilee celebration was held in the college premises in Oriental Colony, Dimapur.
Principal of GHI, Gulab Chandra, gave an overview of institution historical background. He said that in 1968, a proposal was made to introduce Hindi learning academy in Dimapur. Consequently, Hindi teaching training courses were given to teachers. It was in 1985 a land consisting of 20 bigha was demarcated to build the Hindi institution in Oriental Colony, the present site of GHI institution. He also informed that almost 18 bigha was said to be encroached by the private residence today leaving only two bigha for the institution.
In terms of standards, the institute provides up to Grade 12. From 2015 till date, the institute has a total of 2300 teachers, he informed.
“We must remember the pioneer of the institute,” said K Tokugha Sukhalu, advisor of the school education department, in his opening remark at the celebration. Sukhalu had earlier hoisted the flag, unveiled the jubilee stone, and released the souvenir and memento.
Having learned about rampant encroachment of land, Sukhalu has termed it as “very unfortunate” to see the institute “shrunk” since his last visit. Expressing displeasure on such illegal activities, he said “trying to forcibly encroach government land is condemnable.”
Answering to certain needs raised by the department and institute, Sukhalu has assured to look into those requirements. Some of them included- bus service for students, enhancement of scholarship, employing sufficient instructors, creation post of vice principal, and looking for a new location.
Pointing out the importance of learning Hindi, Sukhalu said acquiring knowledge only in Nagamese and English will be hard in finding jobs in other parts of the country, adding ‘India can be your playground if you have fluency in Hindi.’
He informed that the minister of higher and technical education, Temjen Imna Along, is pursuing to upgrade the institute.
Additional director of school education, Pollen Tep said that education system in Nagaland is passing through a transitional period where the old and new generations are faced with accumulated problem. However, he said that such problem could be solved through joint effort.
He encouraged both the Hindi teachers and students to “open their horizons beyond the obvious” in terms of job opportunities in the field. He advised the students to not only look for government jobs but try searching for other avenues.
The event witnessed various performances by the students of the institute.
