Dimapur, October 2 : The Angami Public Organisation (APO) has assured the public that the October 5 environmental event in Kohima town—“A Moment of Solidarity to Enable our Environment”—called by the Angami Youth Organisation (AYO) was not an ‘imposition’ on any citizen.
The APO issued a press release on Sunday saying it was an event into which participation was voluntary.
“The call is not an imposition and neither will anyone be detected (sic) to the appeal made by AYO, but is a call made to the citizens in Angami areas to voluntarily come out to support and extend solidarity to the call made for a better tomorrow,” the APO stated.
“Rather than scanning people and the noble initiatives, APO appeals to one and all to be positive and contribute our little bits to bequeath a better legacy for tomorrow.”
The event begins from 6 am and till 6 pm in ‘Angami inhabited areas.’
The intent was to “create awareness” among the people “in the locality on air, land, and water pollutions” that are threatening life and the earth, the APO stated.
“Situations in parts of our world is going from bad to worse, yet conditions are not irreversible and APO firmly believes that by rallying the people and the community around, to act judiciously on this matter, we have the power to limit the damage and reverse the situation for posterity to come hereafter,” the APO added.
What the event would entail
The AYO also issued a separate note on Sunday offering details of the scheduled event. The organisation has impressed upon citizens of Kohima to “cease their vehicle engines / keep their vehicles off the road for the day, cease / down all commercial power driven works and activities viz. mills, crushers, print, fabrication / workshops/cafes etc, and all other establishments / agents engaging mechanized tools and other high power voltage tools,”
The organization has urged citizens to “take a walk to work, do work with human driven energy, feel a day with nature—spend a day without dependence on fossil fuel energy related life, to take a walk for a healthy and better life, share a moment to enable our environment to recoup its vitality for human sustenance.”
The district administrations, the police, and paramilitary forces on duty, first responders of the district, “people on emergencies / important possessing sufficient proofs”, “people of wedding programs and festivals”, “students and faculties school /college exams schedules”, and government officials “from director / AHODs and above and department buses,” are exempted from the purview of said event.
“People / Institutions /establishments engaging other sources of private conveyance for scheduled works i.e., non-identifiable transportations are requested to contact the office of the Angami Youth Organisation at APO Building Complex (Top floor), Midland Main Town Kohima between 11 am–3 pm on October 3 and 4,” the note added.
The AYO has also appealed to legislators to “attend their respective offices without any escorts.”
The Kohima District Truck Owners and Drivers’ Union has extended support to ‘A moment of solidarity to enable our environment.’ A note from the union on Sunday directed its members to “cease plying in Kohima on October 5 to reduce its carbon emissions.”
